On a self-drive safari you stand on the runners, work the brake and steer your own team, usually swapping with your partner at the halfway point. As a passenger you sit wrapped in a blanket in the basket while a musher drives. Both are legitimate. They are not the same experience, and the second one is much easier with small children or limited mobility.
Distance is the other honest measure. A 5 km ride and a 6 km ride sound similar and feel similar, roughly twenty to thirty minutes on the runners. What varies far more is everything around it: kennel time, the fire hut, whether you meet the puppies, how long the transfer takes. When a two-hour booking includes a 25-minute ride, the other 95 minutes are the product too.
Sled-dog welfare is a fair thing to ask about, and we would rather say plainly that we could not verify which Finnish regulation or certification governs it than point you at a rule we have not read. What you can do yourself is read the recent written reviews for how the kennel is described, and ask the operator directly. Operators who look after their dogs tend to be glad of the question.
