What is free and what is not
Both the Santa Claus Village information service and Visit Rovaniemi state that entrance to the village is free, and that meeting Santa in his office costs nothing. The official photo and video of that meeting are sold separately. We are not printing a price for them, because the primary sources do not publish one, and inventing a figure to look thorough is exactly the thing this site does not do.
The village sits on the Arctic Circle at 66°32′37.11″ N, about eight kilometres north of Rovaniemi city centre. You can reach it on the public bus. So the honest case for a guided tour is not access, it is convenience, a guide who explains what you are looking at, and usually a bundled activity like a reindeer sleigh or husky ride that would cost more bought separately.
Who should book a tour and who should not
If you are staying in Rovaniemi for several days, travelling light and happy on a local bus, you may not need a tour at all for the village itself. If you have a short stay, small children, a lot to fit in, or you want the reindeer and husky element attached, the bundled tours below do real work. Both answers are fine. We would rather you booked the right one.
